Reducing CO2 emissions involved in cement and clinker production

CO2 emissions in clinker and cement production can be divided into two primary sources: emissions from raw materials decarbonization, and emissions from combustion. Several strategies exist to mitigate both types, which will be discussed in detail. Furthermore, to facilitate comparison, a hypothetical ‘standard kiln’ with 4000 tpd capacity, 800 kcal/kg thermal consumption, and a 40-60% energy split between the kiln and calciner respectively, while operating for 8000 hours per year, will be used.

Joel Maia, CEO Europe and Africa at FCT Combustion will be presenting Reducing CO2 Emissions in Cement and Clinker Production: Pathways to a Sustainable Future at the upcoming CarbonZero Global Conference and Exhibition (October 10 and 11 , Wellington Hotel and Spa, Madrid, Spain).

Among the key methods discussed will be: how to increase plant efficiency and reduce emissions while also improving clinker quality, how to incorporate alternative fuel usage with low investment, the replacement of clinker with supplementary cementitious materials, possibilities for hydrogen usage, as well as the oxyfuel combustion process.

“I am delighted to be part of the upcoming CarbonZero program, in which various market leaders will explore the possibilities for decarbonizing the cement industry. FCT is proud to be part of this group and present our contribution to the topic, where we will discuss different strategies to reduce CO2 emissions in cement plants. In particular, we will focus on the production of calcined clays and usage of alternative fuels. These, along with hydrogen-firing, are FCT’s core pillars for cement industry decarbonization.” said Joel Maia.
