The LEGO Group has unveiled a groundbreaking Supplier Sustainability Programme, aimed at drastically reducing carbon emissions within its supply chain by 2026. This initiative is a critical part of LEGO’s broader strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, recognizing that over 99% of its carbon footprint originates from external operations.
New Programme Details:
- Emission Targets: Suppliers are mandated to meet stringent emission reduction targets by 2026, with further cuts anticipated by 2028.
- Data Reporting: Detailed carbon data reporting from suppliers is required to track progress and ensure transparency.
- Collaborative Actions: Emphasis on enhancing efficiency, transitioning to renewable energy sources, and adopting less carbon-intensive transport methods.
Annette Stube, Chief Sustainability Officer at LEGO Group, highlighted the necessity of collaborative efforts: “A net-zero world is simply not possible unless we find solutions that are greater than our own operations. We will not be able to meet our sustainability targets alone – we have to work in partnership with our suppliers. We want children to inherit a healthy planet and there’s no time to waste.”
Building on Past Initiatives
The new programme extends the Engage-to-Reduce initiative from 2014, aiming to help suppliers minimize their environmental impacts. Carsten Rasmussen, Chief Operations Officer at LEGO Group, stated, “Sustainability is a license to operate and a requirement of how we do business, including how we select our suppliers. We have ideas and we have a pathway, but we cannot do it alone. We need all our great partners to help us achieve our sustainability targets.”
Strategic Investments and Goals
LEGO’s climate action plan includes increasing solar capacity and introducing an annual Carbon KPI to measure emissions. Investments in sustainable materials and technology surged by 60% in 2023, showcasing LEGO’s urgent commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.
Future Engagements
The Supplier Sustainability Programme was introduced at a recent Supplier Summit, engaging suppliers across all procurement categories, with an initial focus on carbon accounting and sharing sustainability knowledge.
LEGO’s ongoing efforts underscore the importance of collaboration and innovation in achieving a sustainable future, setting a precedent for industry-wide environmental responsibility.
