The ongoing energy crisis in Europe underlines the urgency to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels as well as imported raw materials. By tapping into the potentials of recycling and material efficiency approaches, the transition to fossil-free production can be accelerated in the short and long run. Findings from a recent study by Agora Industry and Material Economics focusing on CO2 abatement potentials of circular solutions for cement and concrete industries in Europe will be presented at CarbonZero Global Conference on 10 and 11 November in Lisbon, as well as mapping key policies to create circular and resource-efficient markets for these industries going forward.
Agora Industry, a sub-brand of the Berlin-based think tank Agora Energiewende, works on supporting the transformation of the industrial sector towards climate neutrality and the creation of markets for climate-friendly products and closed material loops. Helen Burmeister, a Project Manager at Agora Industry, has worked on circular solutions for energy-intensive materials with a special focus on the cement and concrete branches and design options for a financial instrument that supports the establishment and operation of low-carbon industrial production plants. Currently, she is working on a project that aims to create ambitious yet practicable recommendations for a benchmark for climate-friendly concrete.
Helen Burmeister, Project Manager, Agora Industry: “To achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, we need deep decarbonization in all sectors – including industry. The CarbonZero conference provides a welcome opportunity to exchange strategies and approaches toward achieving a low-carbon building materials sector. With great pleasure, Agora will contribute to the conference by presenting our recent research on decarbonization potentials of circular solutions for the cement and concrete industries in the EU and policy recommendations to foster these potentials.”
Beatrice Ene, Managing Director and Head of Events, Industry Link: “These are troubled times now and clear policies and instruments are as necessary as fresh air. Glad to have Helen Burmeister at CarbonZero: Alternative Fuels and Raw Materials 2022 and hear about benchmarking for climate-friendly concrete they are creating.”
