Nanotechnology and Future of Cementitious Materials

Asli Özbora, Technical Manager at European Ready-Mixed Concrete Organization and General Coordinator (Turkey) at Turkish Ready Mixed Concrete Association, presents Nanotechnology and Future of Cementitious Materials at the upcoming Cementitious Materials International Technical and Trade Congress in Morocco (April 18-19, Marriott Hotel Casablanca).
In the construction sector, as in other fields of Science and Engineering, developments in Nanotechnology are closely monitored, and efforts are made to identify potential new application areas. With the use of nanoparticles, not only are the properties of materials such as strength and durability improved, but it is also possible for them to acquire new functions such as photocatalysis and pressure sensing.

Concrete is the most widely used construction material, its consumption is the second largest on the planet after water. Thus, the sustainability of concrete is critical. The optimized solution for the concrete industry to become an eco-friendly and sustainable engineering material is to obtain a balance among engineering performance, environmental impact and economy.

Nanotechnology enables multidisciplinary concrete science to fully explain and design the behaviour and properties of concrete in all their details, while also reducing the production and ecological costs of construction materials declares Asli Özbora.

Dr. Asli Özbora is a distinguished figure in the field of concrete science and sustainability, currently serving as the General Coordinator of the Turkish Ready Mixed Concrete Association (TRMCA) since 2021. Before assuming her current role, Dr. Özbora was the Secretary General of TRMCA from 2016 to 2021, underscoring her deep commitment to advancing the quality, environmental friendliness, and sustainability of concrete production.

Her expertise is further recognized on a European scale through her role as the Technical Manager for the European Ready-Mixed Concrete Organization (ERMCO) since 2019, where she plays a pivotal role in promoting concrete solutions that adhere to European Codes and Standards. Dr. Özbora also made significant contributions as the Secretary of the Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC) from 2019 to 2022 and served as the Sustainability Committee Secretary for ERMCO from 2016 to 2019.

Throughout her career, Dr. Özbora has been an advocate for nanotechnology in concrete science, leveraging this multidisciplinary approach to enhance the properties and behavior of concrete while aiming to reduce the ecological footprint of construction materials. Her leadership in the TRMCA and involvement with ERMCO reflect her dedication to promoting sustainable construction practices both in Turkey and across Europe.
