Starting January 2026, the South African government proposes to increase the carbon tax more rapidly every year, to at least US$30 by 2030, accelerating to higher levels by 2040, and up to US$120 beyond 2050. Expanding uptake of AFRs and efficient utilization becomes increasingly critical for the cement sector as it is included in the mitigation potential analysis of carbon budget allocation and associated benchmarks at the company level. Dr. Dhiraj Rama will present the way South Africa is determined to reduce its CO2 footprint, considering the developmental state of the nation, at CarbonZero: Alternative Fuels and Raw Materials 2022 in Lisbon, on November 10-11.
Dr. Dhiraj Rama is presently the Industry Executive of the Cement and Concrete-South Africa guiding and representing the member companies’ interests in the field of sustainable development, environmental stewardship, health and safety practices, and community and stakeholder interaction. He is involved in a wide range of projects related to waste management, air quality management as well as climate change and actively participates in stakeholder engagement with the Departments of Environment, Water Affairs, Mining, National Treasury as well as Parliament and provides written comments on draft Strategies and legislations being formulated to inform environmental best practice and sustainable development. He was also actively involved in the development of the national s21Air quality standards.
