Preventive Fire Protection and Sustainability: A Direct and Tangible Connection | Rodrigo Tello Farrera, Area Sales Manager Spain & Portugal, Firefly AB

Successful fire prevention is directly and tangibly related to sustainability. And fire hazards are closely related to industrial processes. Therefore, it is extremely important to act in a preventive way. Firefly systems and technology are designed to detect and extinguish ignition sources before a fire or explosion occurs, identifying and protecting each risk area of the process.

By combining highly reliable and effective detection technologies, TRUE IR, FD-UVIR, MGD, with a fast response extinguishing system in specific areas it is possible to have a complete protection of the machinery and keep the process running. Highlighting the importance of having an integrated and future proof control system that provides the human teams with all the clear and complete information about the areas the system is protecting.

Harnessing Public Procurement for Low-Carbon Innovation: Driving Decarbonization Through Collaboration | Samira Boussetta, CEO and Founder of Altaee Consultancy

Public procurement, accounting for approximately 14% of the European Union’s GDP, holds immense potential to support Europe’s transition to a low-carbon economy. By leveraging its purchasing power, the public sector can create lead markets for low-carbon cement, concrete, and other sustainable building materials, fostering industrial innovation and reducing environmental impact. Despite its recognition in the European Commission’s Single Market Strategy as a key enabler for low-carbon transformation, public procurement remains underutilized as a strategic policy instrument.

Samira Boussetta, CEO of Altaee and an expert in sustainable innovation, will explore the current landscape of public procurement for innovation in Europe, highlighting pioneering initiatives by public buyers to accelerate decarbonization. She will also share actionable insights on fostering productive dialogue between public authorities and industry, empowering public purchasers to adopt new approaches that support low-carbon industrial development while addressing sustainability challenges.

Portuguese Cement Industry Roadmap towards Carbon Neutrality in 2050 | Fátima Rato, Head of Sustainability, Public Policy, and Communications at the Portuguese Cement Industry Technical Association (ATIC)

The Portuguese Cement Industry Roadmap towards Carbon Neutrality in 2050 reinforces a strong commitment to sustainability throughout the cement and concrete value chain. It is consistent with environmental goals assumed by Portugal in the European and international context, through the leverage of innovative technological solutions developed in a “5C” approach: Clinker, Cement, Concrete, Construction, and (re)Carbonation.

The Roadmap sets out measurable goals and associated investments of the Portuguese Cement Industry for 2030 and 2050, underscoring the importance of policies and infrastructure in fostering synergies between sustainability and competitiveness. It emphasizes how this dynamic can generate positive environmental, social, economic, and industrial impacts.

Plataforma Madeira Circular (Madeira’s Circular Platform) | Cláudia Sá, Environmental Engineer, Senior technician in the Waste Management and Circular Economy Division of the Regional Directorate of the Environment and the Sea

The Madeira’s Circular Platform is one of the key measures of the Madeira’s Circular Agenda. It’s a regional online platform dedicated to the circular economy, administered by the Regional Directorate of the Environment and the Sea. This platform serves as a forum to bring together the main stakeholders in the circular economy (civil society, businesses, public administration, and the scientific and academic community). The main goal of this platform is to build the communication channels that are much needed to promote collaborative action and support the implementation of Madeira’s Circular Agenda goals.

This platform includes several examples of the best regional circular practices, which promote the efficient use of resources through value chains and their reintegration into the market. These practices focus on the economic sectors identified as the key sectors for the transition from a linear economy to a circular economy in the Region of Madeira, as an insular region. In the construction sector, the platform provides information on closing the loop and offers a guide to best practices specific to this sector.
