Sebastian Manhart, Senior Policy Advisor, Carbonfuture:Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) Market Trends: What It Means for Cement and Construction
With the growing urgency to address climate change, carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is becoming central to global net-zero efforts. This talk will focus on global market trends in CDR, with a particular emphasis on policy developments in the U.S. and EU, and how these are shaping the future of the cement and construction industries. We will highlight leading companies at the intersection of CDR and construction, showcasing innovations in carbon-negative materials and other solutions aimed at reducing the sector’s carbon footprint. By examining these trends and industry leaders, we’ll provide insight into how cement and construction can adapt to a rapidly evolving carbon-conscious marketplace.
Dr. Miquel Angel Sanjuan, Head of the Cement and Mortars Area, IECA: Standardization of Coal Bottom Ash as a New Cement Constituent
The European Union (EU) recognized that the cement sector is indispensable to Europe’s economy in the EU Green Deal published in 2019 since is a supplier to several strategic value chains. Then, the cement sector looks at how carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced by acting at each stage of the value chain through its 2050 Carbon Neutrality Roadmap to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. It should be underlined that the reduction of the clinker to cement ratio is one of the several levers to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions as outlined in mentioned roadmap. The clinker factor decreased from 0.91 (1990) to 0.80 (2023) in the last years, but it should be reduced up to 0.60 by 2050. Accordingly, cements with larger amounts of cement constituents different to the clinker should be produced and used. Furthermore, new additions should be standardized to this end, such as coal bottom ash (CBA).
Joe Harder, Managing Director, OneStone Consulting: Clay Calcination Trends and Outlook
Low-carbon cements made from calcined clays are considered to help us to achieve our environmental goals, while providing quality concrete for our construction needs. This product has a huge potential to reduce the clinker to cement ratio and thereby reduce the specific t of CO2 emitted with each t of cement. Clay minerals are abundant worldwide, differently to the availability of fly ash, slag and other cementitious materials. Accordingly, calcined clay could be a viable option for countries in Africa, Latin America and South Asia, where the costly CCS (carbon capture and storage) technologies might not be feasible and will suffer a lack of funding. This presentation highlights which are the best technologies for clay calcination, what are the trends and how has the market developed so far. Finally, a market outlook for 2035 will be given.
Dr. Thomas Schroeder, Head of Environmental Products EDF Trading: Netzero in hard-to-abate sectors- Opportunities and Challenges
When it comes to heavy industry, like construction and cement, as well as other hard-to-abate industries, ambition to decarbonize can be a real driver to corporate transformation. While it is hard to change existing processes and structures, the transition towards lower emissions presents a formidable segway for any C-suite executive to make the organization more resilient and to gear it up for future growth. Starting with a brief description of the concept of net zero and delving into the particular realities of hard-to-abate industries, this presentation highlights some of the opportunities and challenges that companies face on their path to net zero. It provides real world examples and contextualizes the environment these companies operate in by looking at some of the policy and regulatory requirements they find themselves in.
