A critical element for addressing climate ambitions is embodied carbon policies. From the design community to investors to state and federal efforts, there is a growing demand for low-carbon cement and concrete on projects. Now, with the US SEC Climate Disclosure Requirements and adoption of mandatory rules such as Buy Clean policies that establish emissions limits on concrete, both public and private owners reaffirm commitments to net-zero carbon goals.
Fortunately, the concrete industry took a leadership role in establishing new reporting tools for material transparency to ensure a balanced approach to environmental impact, cost and long-term durability. Meanwhile, the industry is still developing standards to transform concrete manufacturing. Done right, clean materials policies can catalyze market transformation for deeply decarbonized concrete (and, by extension, cement). Conversely, deficient policies can hinder competition, impede innovation and stall efforts of the carbon-intensive heavy industry.
Register now for the upcoming CarbonZero Global Conference and Exhibition 2024 (October 10-11, Wellington Hotel and Spa, Madrid) for discovering the US Perspective – Concrete’s Radical Transparency, presented by Tien Peng, Co-founder GreenPlum Street.
Mr. Peng has developed strategic and technical solutions to manage risks, capture opportunities and future-proof businesses for the past three decades. As the former Senior Vice President of Sustainability, Codes and Standards for the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, he led efforts to decarbonize the concrete industry by 21% in seven years by launching the industry leading NRMCA Environmental Product Declaration Program and the Concrete Sustainability Council to meet international demand for new environmental reporting tools. Mr. Peng currently serves on the ACI 323 Low-Carbon Concrete Code and the ASHRAE 189.1 High Performance Green Buildings Standards committees developing new criteria for low-carbon materials. He is an award-winning advocate and collaborator on many Buy Clean policies in the U.S. with successful adoption of low-carbon legislation in California, Colorado, Washington, and Maryland.
GreenPlum Street LLC strengthens organizations by driving value from environmental, social, and governance (ESG) to deliver the highest level of achievement and empower people to reach their full potential. In an increasingly complex world, risks associated with climate change have never been felt so deeply in the built environment. Legislation is tightening. Investor scrutiny is intensifying. And the clients are demanding more sustainable offerings. More than a risk management tool, we utilize the ESG framework to unlock decarbonization levers in the built environment. We implement design-thinking to develop innovative solutions based on the needs of the customers, which leads to better products, services, and processes. Successful implementation requires a strategy closely aligned with business priorities to build consensus and support among stakeholders.
