Hatice Cebeci, Group Cement Quality Director and M. Burak Uzun, Sr. Product Development and Technologies Specialist Limak Cement: “Research to Reality of Limestone Calcined Clay Cement with Boron Activated Clinker” demonstrating how complementary material and process technologies can deliver meaningful, scalable and economically viable decarbonization in the cement industry.

The decarbonization of cement production requires complementary strategies addressing both clinker content and manufacturing efficiency. This study presents an integrated approach combining Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3) and Boron Activated Cement (BAC) to reduce the environmental and economic impacts of cement production while maintaining mechanical performance.

LC3 enables substantial clinker reduction through the incorporation of calcined clay and limestone and can be implemented by retrofitting existing kiln infrastructure for calcined clay production. BAC, in contrast, modifies clinker phase chemistry through boron activation, enhancing clinker efficiency and enabling 5% higher addition levels while maintaining mechanical performance compared with conventional clinker. BAC also provides an 6% reduction in specific heat consumption and can be implemented using existing production systems without additional any capital investment.

The combined LC3–BAC approach provides benefits across organisational, efficiency, environmental, and economic dimensions. Based on GNR 2000 reference data, conventional CEM I (95% clinker and 5% gypsum) has an estimated footprint of 819.1 kg CO₂/t cement, whereas the LC3–BAC combination reduces this value to 464.7 kg CO₂/t. These results demonstrate the potential of integrating clinker substitution with tailored clinker chemistry as a scalable pathway toward lower-carbon cement production.
