Reclinker has raised £10 million in Series A funding to initiate commercial production of cement manufactured from demolition waste, following successful trials conducted at 7 Steel UK’s Cardiff facility.
The technology, developed at the University of Cambridge, enables the recovery of cement paste from construction demolition waste and its introduction into an electric arc furnace used for melting scrap steel. During steel processing, the recovered material is converted back into clinker, the solid intermediate normally produced by heating limestone in kilns before being ground into cement.
Reclinker’s process eliminates the need for traditional kilns and does not rely on quarried limestone or fossil‑fuel‑based energy. Because electric arc furnaces can be powered by renewable or nuclear sources, the method significantly reduces the carbon footprint associated with cement production. The company expects its product to deliver a 50 per cent reduction in emissions compared with conventional cement, at equivalent cost, with further improvements anticipated as production scales.
According to the company, thousands of tonnes have already been produced at the Cardiff site, and initial commercial sales have been secured. Reclinker is targeting concrete producers affected by declining availability of blast‑furnace slag, long used in low‑carbon cement blends, as steelmakers continue to shut down blast furnaces.
The funding round was co‑led by Clean Growth Fund and AP Ventures, with participation from the Development Bank of Wales, Kibo Invest, and existing investors Zero Carbon Capital and Cambridge Enterprise. Reclinker states that the capital will be used to expand production in Cardiff and replicate the process at additional electric arc furnace sites in Europe and the United States.
Stephen Price, Investment Partner at Clean Growth Fund, described the company’s approach as “a compelling example of how industrial symbiosis can unlock meaningful emissions reductions by leveraging existing infrastructure.” Gabriella Nizam, Head of Sustainability and Public Affairs at 7 Steel UK, noted that the trials demonstrated how established steel recycling operations can support lower‑carbon cement production.
Reclinker’s Chief Executive, Bill Yost, reported that the round was oversubscribed. The company also highlighted Innovate UK’s Advance Market Commitment—through which major concrete users have expressed intent to purchase substantial volumes of low‑carbon materials over the next five years—as further evidence of market demand.
