CarbonZero Delegates Explore Holcim’s GO4ZERO Project: A Firsthand Look at Industrial Decarbonization in Action

As part of the CarbonZero Global Conference & Exhibition 2026 program, delegates had the unique opportunity to visit Holcim Belgium’s GO4ZERO project in Obourg, one of Europe’s most ambitious industrial decarbonization initiatives.

The visit provided a firsthand look at how circular economy principles, alternative fuels, alternative raw materials, and future carbon capture technologies are being integrated into cement production. Participants explored how the project is transforming industrial processes to significantly reduce emissions while preparing to permanently capture up to 1.1 million tonnes of CO₂ annually.

GO4ZERO is a pioneering initiative that combines innovative cement manufacturing technologies, high levels of alternative fuel usage, increased incorporation of recycled materials, and future carbon capture systems to accelerate the transition toward near-zero cement production. By reducing dependence on fossil fuels and virgin raw materials, the project supports both industrial competitiveness and the development of a truly circular construction value chain.

The benefits of GO4ZERO extend well beyond emissions reduction. The project strengthens resource efficiency, diverts waste from landfill, advances circular economy practices, supports local industrial innovation, and creates a model for the future of sustainable construction across Europe.

For many attendees, the experience was a conference highlight, offering a tangible example of how innovation, collaboration, and investment are accelerating the transition toward a net-zero industry.
