  • Nuada Launches Carbon Capture Trials with Buzzi Unicem at Italian Cement Facility

UK-based carbon capture technology provider Nuada has announced the launch of its pilot plant operation at Buzzi Unicem’s cement facility in Monselice, Italy. This trial represents a significant advancement in carbon capture technology and marks a milestone in the decarbonisation efforts within the cement industry.

Buzzi Unicem, a leading player in the cement industry, is testing Nuada’s cutting-edge carbon capture technology as part of its strategy to produce low-carbon cement. This collaboration aims to showcase the potential of Nuada’s advanced technology in reducing carbon emissions from cement production.

Innovative Carbon Capture Technology

Nuada’s pilot project at Buzzi Unicem’s Monselice facility features an energy-efficient carbon capture solution that combines advanced solid sorbents, known as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with a mature vacuum pressure swing adsorption (VPSA) process. Unlike traditional carbon capture methods that rely on heat, Nuada’s electrically-powered system uses pressure to separate CO2 from industrial flue gases. This approach addresses the energy, cost, and integration challenges typically associated with deploying carbon capture solutions in industrial settings.

Project Milestone

The fully operational MOF-based VPSA carbon capture plant at Monselice is now capturing one tonne of CO2 per day from cement flue gas. This project is supported by the Global Concrete and Cement Association (GCCA) and was initiated through the GCCA’s Innovandi Open Challenge programme, which seeks to accelerate innovation in the concrete and cement sectors.

Dr. Conor Hamill, co-CEO of Nuada, highlighted the significance of this deployment, stating, “We are deploying the most energy-efficient carbon capture technology developed to date, a solution that redefines the decarbonisation landscape for hard-to-abate sectors like cement.” Dr. Jose Casaban, co-CEO of Nuada, added, “This plant demonstrates the robustness, scalability, and game-changing benefits of our innovative capture system. Together with Buzzi, we are demonstrating the future of carbon capture in cement.”

Implications for the Cement Industry

This pilot project is expected to provide valuable insights into the application of Nuada’s carbon capture technology within the cement industry, paving the way for broader adoption. The successful demonstration of this technology could lead to significant reductions in CO2 emissions from cement manufacturing, contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.

The collaboration between Nuada and Buzzi Unicem exemplifies the industry’s commitment to exploring and implementing innovative solutions for sustainability. As the demand for low-carbon construction materials continues to rise, such initiatives are crucial in driving the transition towards a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly future.
