Neocrete, a New Zealand-based company, has announced a strategic partnership with several leading cement manufacturers, including Cemex, Heidelberg Materials, CRH, Titan, Cementos Argos, and Ultratech Cement. The collaboration focuses on promoting Neocrete’s innovative Activator product, designed to significantly reduce the amount of cement required in concrete production.
Neocrete’s Activator product leverages volcanic ash and residual ash from industrial processes to decrease cement usage by 40% to 50%. The company has set an ambitious goal to eliminate cement from concrete entirely by 2027, creating a path toward carbon-free concrete. A key component of this effort will be the new pilot plant in Mt Wellington, valued at US$2 million, which is expected to produce 0.12 million tonnes of cement annually, meeting 10% of New Zealand’s demand.
Co-founder Zarina Bazoeva emphasized the scalability of the solution, stating, “We don’t need to produce the whole volume of cement. We activate the concrete chemically with a small catalyst at 3kg compared to 100kg of cement. So, we can scale fast.”
The Activator product will undergo a life cycle assessment once the pilot plant becomes operational, marking a significant step forward in the global effort to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete production.
