Lafarge Serbia is set to open a new €110 million cement plant in Obrenovac, designed to utilize ash from thermal power plants. This initiative, announced by the government on August 5, 2024, aims to address Serbia’s pressing waste management issues.
The new plant represents a significant investment in sustainable practices, converting ash waste into valuable cement, thereby reducing the environmental impact of waste disposal. A 2019 report by the European Environmental Agency highlighted Serbia’s waste challenges, noting approximately 100 municipal landfills and over 3000 illegal dumpsites across the country.
Dimitrije Knjeginjic, an executive at Lafarge Serbia, stated, “This production will benefit Serbia and its economy, and it is absolutely acceptable from an environmental point of view because it solves the problem of ash landfills.”
This development aligns with broader efforts to improve waste management and environmental sustainability in Serbia, showcasing Lafarge Serbia’s commitment to innovative solutions for long-standing environmental issues. The new plant is expected to significantly contribute to the local economy while promoting environmentally friendly industrial practices.
