Alpacem, the market leader for cement and concrete in the Alpe-Adria region, has announced a €50 million investment to modernise its Wietersdorf cement plant in Carinthia, Austria. The upgrade will include a new cement grinding plant, expected to save up to 21,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually and reduce electricity consumption. The project is slated for completion and commissioning by 2027.
This significant investment aligns with Alpacem’s broader goal of achieving CO₂-neutral production by 2035. Alongside the modernisation, the company plans to construct a new cement silo plant in the Görtschitztal valley, which will be directly connected to the railroad, enhancing logistical efficiency.
Florian Salzer, Technical Director at Alpacem Zement Austria, highlighted the sustainability aspect, stating, “With this new project, we are investing in a sustainable future and laying the foundations for energy-efficient and environmentally conscious cement grinding.” Managing Director Lutz Weber emphasized the company’s commitment to a CO₂-neutral future, stating that achieving this ambitious goal requires a comprehensive package of measures.
In addition to the plant modernisation, Alpacem has also commenced the construction of its new company headquarters in Wietersdorf. The groundbreaking ceremony, held on March 11, 2022, marked the start of a €6 million project to build a 1,500-square-meter facility, which will house 50 modern office workplaces and changing rooms for site staff. The new headquarters is expected to be completed by March 2023 and will serve as the operational heart of Alpacem’s activities across its 21 locations in Austria, Slovenia, and Italy.
The new headquarters is designed to foster collaboration and personal exchange between local employees, management, and international teams. Alpacem’s Managing Directors, Lutz Weber and Bernhard Auer, expressed their enthusiasm, noting that the facility will provide an attractive working environment and support the company’s growth as a competitive and future-oriented entity. The new headquarters also symbolizes Alpacem’s commitment to the Carinthian region, where it has deep roots and plays a crucial role as an employer with 650 employees.
The project was welcomed by local politicians, including Carinthian provincial government members Sebastian Schuschnig and Martin Gruber, who praised Alpacem’s long-term investment in the region and its role in safeguarding jobs while reducing its ecological footprint.
Alpacem is also actively involved in major infrastructure projects across the Alpe-Adria region, supplying cement and concrete for projects such as the Karawanken Tunnel, hospitals in Italy, and the Divača-Koper railway in Slovenia. Annually, the company produces over two million tons of cement and binder and more than 350,000 cubic meters of ready-mixed concrete, underscoring its significant contribution to the construction sector.
