In a landmark move for the construction industry, Carbon Upcycling Technologies, Inc. has delivered its first 200 tonnes of CO2-enhanced fly ash to BURNCO Rock Products Ltd., setting a new standard in sustainable building practices. This significant event marks the initial delivery for 2024 under a partnership aimed at integrating low-carbon concrete solutions across Calgary.

The project benefits from a CAN$4.4 million grant from Emissions Reduction Alberta, emphasizing innovation in sustainability. This grant is designed to support projects that help reduce environmental impacts through advanced technological solutions.

Carbon Upcycling’s proprietary technology captures CO2 emissions and enhances materials like fly ash, a byproduct traditionally considered waste. This process not only recycles waste but also turns it into a superior alternative to conventional cement, significantly reducing carbon footprints in construction processes.

Apoorv Sinha, co-founder and CEO of Carbon Upcycling Technologies, expressed enthusiasm about the milestone. “Our technology not only reduces the environmental impact of construction but also fosters innovation in creating sustainable building materials,” he stated.

The collaboration with BURNCO is already showing promising results, with over 2000 tonnes of CO2-enhanced materials being used in various infrastructure projects throughout Alberta, including pathways at Telus Spark and structures at the Calgary Zoo.

Norm Kuntz of BURNCO highlighted the strategic alignment of this initiative with their sustainability objectives, emphasizing the provision of eco-friendly solutions to their customers without compromising quality.

This initiative by Carbon Upcycling and BURNCO is a pioneering example of how the construction industry can effectively incorporate carbon capture and utilization technologies to make substantial strides in global emissions reduction efforts.
