Hoffmann Green Introduces H‑CLAY®, a New Cold‑Processed Clay Technology for Next‑Generation Cement

Hoffmann Green has unveiled H‑CLAY®, a new technology designed to transform raw clay into a functional co‑product for use in 0%‑clinker cement formulations — all without the need for high‑temperature treatment.

A new approach to clay activation

H‑CLAY® is built on a cold‑processing method that eliminates the traditional calcination step, one of the most energy‑intensive and carbon‑heavy stages in cement production. By avoiding heat‑based activation entirely, the process dramatically reduces energy demand and CO₂ emissions while enabling a wide variety of clays to be repurposed as valuable components in low‑carbon binders.

This innovation opens the door to a new class of cements engineered for structural applications, combining mechanical performance, durability, and a significantly lighter environmental footprint. It also broadens the palette of raw materials the company can draw from, tapping into global clay resources with minimal processing requirements.

Accelerating the shift to low‑carbon cement

Hoffmann Green has long positioned itself as a driver of change in a sector that has remained largely unchanged for two centuries. H‑CLAY® reinforces that trajectory, offering a technology that directly addresses the construction industry’s most pressing challenges: lowering CO₂ emissions, conserving natural resources, and industrialising more efficient production pathways.

Beyond its technical benefits, H‑CLAY® also strengthens the company’s strategic flexibility. By enabling new material combinations and new product families, it supports expansion into additional market segments and broadens the scope of applications for clinker‑free cement.

Part of a growing portfolio of alternative binders

The launch of H‑CLAY® builds on Hoffmann Green’s existing suite of low‑carbon technologies, which already includes:

  • H‑UKR® – alkali‑activated slag
  • H‑IONA® – supersulfated cement
  • H‑EVA® – alkali‑based ettringite binder
  • H‑P2A® – geopolymer technology

Together, these solutions form the foundation of the company’s long‑term goal: developing a complete range of high‑performance, fully clinker‑free cements, with a target of six distinct technologies by 2030.

A milestone for the company’s innovation roadmap

According to Hoffmann Green’s leadership, H‑CLAY® represents a major step in proving that high‑performance cement can be produced at scale without relying on clinker. The cold‑processing of clay marks a new frontier in the company’s R&D efforts and reinforces its ambition to lead the transition toward a decarbonised cement industry.
