In a groundbreaking move for industrial decarbonization, thyssenkrupp Polysius has been selected to supply the kiln system for the world’s first zero-emission quicklime plant, a revolutionary facility developed by SMA Mineral and based on electrification technology from SaltX Technology.
This flagship project, to be constructed in Norway, is based on the ZEQL (Zero Emission Quicklime) concept—a first-of-its-kind process that replaces fossil fuels in lime production with fully electric calcination. By eliminating carbon dioxide emissions entirely, the ZEQL plant represents a major leap toward climate-neutral industrial processes.
“We are proud to contribute to this landmark project that sets a new standard for sustainable lime production,” said Christian Myland, CEO of thyssenkrupp Polysius. “This collaboration is a testament to how industrial partnerships can accelerate the transition to net-zero. We are engineering the future of decarbonization.”
Scaling Innovation with Engineering Excellence
thyssenkrupp Polysius, a leading technology supplier in the cement and lime industries, will bring its advanced engineering capabilities to scale SaltX’s innovative electric calcination system to industrial levels. The ZEQL pilot plant, scheduled for commissioning in 2027, will have an annual production capacity of 40,000 tons of zero-emission quicklime.
The project has secured substantial support, with €24 million (NOK 287 million) in funding from Enova, Norway’s state-owned enterprise promoting sustainable energy innovation.
A Nordic Powerhouse Leading the Green Shift
SMA Mineral, one of the largest lime producers in the Nordic region, operates across Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Estonia. The company is a key supplier for vital sectors such as steel, construction, pulp and paper, water treatment, and agriculture. Through this bold investment in the ZEQL project, SMA Mineral is pioneering a fossil-free future for lime—a critical raw material in countless industries.
The project builds on the momentum established earlier this year when thyssenkrupp Polysius and SaltX Technology signed a Letter of Intent (February 2025), formalizing their shared commitment to electrifying industrial processes and reducing global emissions.
