Femi Akinrebiyo, Global Manager for Manufacturing and Trade Supplier Finance, International Finance Corporation: Scaling Financing for the Decarbonization of Construction Materials in Emerging Markets

The construction materials sectors have a vital role to play in the economy as these materials are critical for economic development. However, the production and use of cement, steel, and aluminum have a significant carbon footprint, with cement production accounting for approximately 8% of global carbon emissions. Progress towards decarbonization in the cement sector is gaining traction in developed countries but not so much in emerging markets and developing economies, where, by 2030 approximately 23% emissions intensity reduction to reach the global net zero target by 2050 is required. Switching to alternative fuels and using alternative raw materials are essential emission reduction levers pursued by cement players and require the development of an ecosystem to address value chain challenges in emerging markets. As the largest global development finance institution focused on the private sector in emerging markets, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), member of the World Bank Group, is working on expanding and enhancing the means to help companies leapfrog the decarbonization of their operations in emerging markets, leveraging our financing and advisory capabilities to support the adoption of best available technologies and the piloting and scaling of new ones.

Aniceto Zaragoza Ramirez, Director, Oficemen: Decarbonisation of the cement sector: a collective work

The Spanish cement sector drew up its first decarbonisation roadmap in 2015. Three updates have been made since then, the latest one being just these days. Each update has increased the level of ambition and at the moment the objective for the 2050 horizon is to have a product with a negative CO2 footprint: CO2 capture, the use of biomass as fuel and recarbonation management, as well as the intensive use of the rest of the levers included in the 5 Cs strategy will allow us to achieve this result, provided that all the actors in the construction world are committed to this objective (from administrations to end users). We will not be able to do it alone, but together we can make a better world.
