Dr. Luis Baquerizo

Dr. Luis Baquerizo is the Director of the Central Research Laboratory at CalPortland, based in Southern California, where he oversees efforts focused on decarbonization and the development of high value‑added products and innovative solutions.

He previously worked in Massachusetts at Sublime Systems as Head of Product R&D, contributing to the advancement of emerging low‑carbon cement technologies. Before that, Dr. Baquerizo served as Head of R&D at Cementos Pacasmayo in Peru, where he led the development of new constructive solutions for the concrete and dry‑mortar businesses. Earlier in his career, he spent nearly a decade with Holcim and Lafarge in Switzerland and France, focusing on blended cement development, SCM assessment, performance optimization, and decarbonization, including the creation of high–value‑added specialty products.

Dr. Baquerizo holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Ecuador, a master’s degree in Materials Science completed in Sweden and Spain, and a PhD in Materials Science from EPFL in Switzerland. He is also a recipient of the Le Chatelier Medal in recognition of his contributions to cement research and innovation.
