SCMs as Game Changers: Unlocking Decarbonization and Market Competitiveness by Amr Nader, Co-founder and CEO A³&Co.
The cement industry stands at a critical crossroads, where sustainability imperatives and market competitiveness must converge. Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) have emerged as a key enabler in the race toward low-carbon cement production, offering a dual advantage—reducing carbon footprints while enhancing profitability. However, unlocking the full potential of fly ash, slag, silica fume, and natural pozzolans requires a holistic, data-driven, and market-aligned strategy.
This session will go beyond traditional SCM discussions by addressing how an optimized SCM integration strategy can:
- Accelerate decarbonization in alignment with 2030 and 2050 Net Zero targets
- Ensure CBAM & EPD compliance to secure global market access
- Optimize SCM sourcing and supply chain resilience for cost-effective deployment
- Leverage digital maturity (D²I) to enhance SCM performance tracking and predictive modeling
- Drive financial viability by linking SCM optimization to investment, funding, and carbon credit monetization
Drawing insights from real-world implementations, this presentation will provide a strategic roadmap for cement producers to move beyond SCM substitution as a compliance measure and instead capitalize on it as a competitive advantage. The discussion will also highlight the role of regulatory trends, digital transformation, and financial structuring in making SCMs an integral part of future-proof cement operations.
By the end of this session, attendees will gain a pragmatic, business-oriented perspective on SCMs, ensuring they are not just a sustainability requirement but a profitability driver in the evolving global cement market.
ACI Standards for Sustainable Concrete: An International Update and the ACI 318-25 Sustainability Appendix by Ahmad Mhanna, MS Civil Engineer, ACI Middle East and North Africa Regional Director
This presentation provides an overview of the American Concrete Institute’s (ACI) mission and its latest initiatives for promoting sustainable concrete practices worldwide. It highlights recent updates to ACI codes and standards, emphasizing their role in ensuring safe, durable, and environmentally responsible concrete projects. The session will also focus on the Sustainability Appendix of ACI 318-25, offering practical guidance for engineers, architects, and contractors. This appendix outlines key provisions for incorporating sustainable materials and practices into concrete design and construction, aligning with current standards and best practices to minimize environmental impact and promote longevity. A key highlight will be on the ACI Center of Excellence for Carbon Neutral Concrete (NEU), and its crucial role in guiding the industry towards greater sustainability in concrete construction.
A net-zero built environment in the EMEA region by 2050 by Dr. Hisham Hafez, post-doctorate research fellow at the University of Leeds
Concrete will persist as the primary construction material for the near future challenging the accelerating Global warming issues. The decarbonisation of the concrete value chain involves a range of interventions with varying levels of technological maturity, from advanced solutions like carbon capture and storage to the increased use of supplementary cementitious materials. However, the readiness to adopt these strategies differs widely across the EMEA region, particularly between developed and developing economies. This presentation presents the modelled values of concrete demand expected across the region till 2050 and demonstrates how optimising fit-for-purpose decarbonisation strategies, with immediate action, could contribute to a net-zero built environment across the region.
