Panel Discussion: Navigating the Path to Carbon Neutrality — Policy, Standards & Market Dynamics

Achieving carbon neutrality in the cement industry will require more than technology alone — it demands credible standards, coherent policy frameworks, and markets that drive change. This panel brings together experts from policy, science, consulting, and corporate sustainability to examine how ambition can translate into action.

The discussion will open with Dr. Joe Harder discussing “The Future of the CCUS Market in the Cement Industry”, providing a wake-up call on how far the technology has progressed, what deployment could realistically look like between 2030 and 2050, and where its limits lie. From there, the conversation will broaden to explore how carbon markets are evolving worldwide — from the multiple regional trading systems already operating in China, to Europe’s mature framework, and to the emerging policy landscape in Latin America, including Brazil’s steps toward establishing a national market. The discussion will consider what these different approaches mean for cement producers navigating compliance, competitiveness, and long-term investment strategies.

Another focus will be the standards and commitments shaping corporate climate action. Panelists will explore how science-based targets, EU and international policy expectations, and transparency frameworks are reshaping business strategies in carbon-intensive sectors.

Finally, the discussion will tie these strands together:

  • Where can CCUS deliver real impact over the next decades?
  • How should policy and carbon markets be designed to accelerate adoption?
  • What role do standards play in ensuring corporate targets are credible and actionable?
  • And ultimately, how do these elements align to create a clear pathway for the sector toward 2030 and 2050 milestones?

Moderator:Dr. Joe Harder — Managing Director, OneStone Consulting Ltd

Panelists:

  • Kim Schoppink — Europe Regional Lead, Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)
  • Josilene Ticianelli Vannuzini Ferrer — PhD Researcher, PROCAM/USP
  • Roxana Suciu — Director, Energy, Sustainability & Climate Change, KPMG Romania
  • Mihai Tomescu — Expert, Energy & Environment, European Environment Agency

This session will challenge us to consider not just where the cement industry stands today, but how credible standards, effective policies, and pragmatic technologies can align to deliver carbon neutrality in the decades ahead.
