The National Center for Waste Management (MWAN) has completed a five-month research experiment on the use of iron slag as an additive in Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC).

The project, conducted in collaboration with Riyadh Cement, involved the use of 1,273.88 tons of iron slag. Results showed that adding 1% to 2% of iron slag improved the properties of the cement.

The initiative demonstrated the feasibility of using industrial by-products in cement production, contributing to waste reduction and lower carbon emissions. MWAN stated that the experiment serves as a model for cooperation between regulatory authorities and industry and represents the first step in a broader plan to transform waste into sustainable economic resources, attract investment, and support the Kingdom’s sustainability objectives.
