This presentation explores the transformative impact of women in the cement and concrete industry, highlighting the importance of allyship and collaboration. We will delve into the significant contributions women make in the workplace, particularly in nontraditional careers, and debunk common myths that hinder their progress. By addressing the unique challenges women face, we will outline effective success strategies, emphasizing the role of Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) in fostering an inclusive and supportive environment. Join us to learn how allyship and collaboration can drive innovation, enhance diversity, and build a more resilient industry.
Balancing a full-time career with the demands of family life, especially as a mother of young children, presents unique challenges—particularly in traditionally male-dominated industries like cement. Rather than seeing work and personal life as opposing forces, a more effective approach is integration, where both coexist harmoniously. Organization and prioritization are critical, as is self-care, which is crucial in order to sustain long-term well-being. Understanding oneself—recognizing what brings both personal and professional fulfillment—allows for more meaningful choices in daily life. In an industry that often requires extensive travel, staying connected with family, setting boundaries, and maximizing quality time at home become essential. Additionally, finding alignment between one's personal purpose and the mission of the organization fosters deeper engagement and satisfaction. Work-life integration is not about achieving perfection but about creating a sustainable rhythm where career success, personal happiness, and industry demands support rather than compete with one another.
This presentation highlights the Women in Lafarge Leadership (WILL) initiative, which was relaunched in 2021 as part of Lafarge's broader Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging strategy. The goal of WILL is to empower women within the organization by creating a supportive space for connection, growth, and learning. The mission of WILL is to foster an environment where women can network, develop both professionally and personally, and gain access to opportunities to engage with senior leaders. Key activities include inviting senior female leaders to share their career journeys and insights, offering networking opportunities through casual events, and promoting cross-functional collaboration through initiatives like "Meet & Greets" and "Lunch and Learn" sessions. WILL has also actively contributed to shaping the ECAN Diversity & Inclusion Roadmap, providing valuable recommendations to enhance company culture. Recently, WILL has been focused on organizing focus groups to better understand the unique challenges women face in advancing within the organization. This is not just a journey for the women within Lafarge, but also one I would like to share with other women in the industry. I want to discuss my own personal journey and explore how every woman, regardless of where they work, can initiate projects like WILL to foster supportive environments for women in the cement industry and beyond.
In an industry traditionally dominated by men, women are breaking barriers and reshaping the landscape of construction. But for us, breaking these barriers is about working together, towards a common goal, acknowledging that our strength relies on the efforts of a collective – the network of Green Building Councils around the world, with inspiring leaders that have worked for years to bring us to where we are. Join me in this session where I will share how my journey in science and construction has been shape but such amazing leaders.
Verónica Climent Vicedo will discuss how embracing diversity is a key competitive and strategic advantage in driving innovation and sustainability in the cement industry. With 25 years of experience, she has led initiatives to optimize performance through operational excellence, cutting-edge technologies and talent development initiatives. As Industrial Performance Manager at Holcim, she has implemented sustainable practices that not only meet environmental goals but also enhance operational efficiency. Verónica will emphasize that diverse teams foster creativity, which accelerates the adoption of new technologies and solutions. By promoting inclusive leadership, organizations can unlock their full industrial potential and achieve their strategic goals. She will demonstrate how fostering diversity is not just a business necessity but also a key enabler of transformation, leading to a more sustainable and competitive future for the industry.
Janet Greenwood is a built environment professional with over 30 years' experience. She has been part of the leadership team of some of the UK's largest infrastructure projects, including Tideway and the Lower Thames Crossing.
