Sponsors

Based on the huge success of 2022 edition,  CarbonZero Global Conference and Exhibition continues to make a stand for the transition to NetZero as a innovative and unique concept. The event brings together C+ executives and decision makers from cement manufacturing companies, environmental specialists, equipment and technology producers as well as Innovation, Research and Development, Academia, Authorities and Think tanks to give a 360 degree approach to what it means to transition to NetZero. CarbonZero is redefining the conference approach by prioritizing international decision makers and innovators to meet and exchange ideas that shift the world to change.

On October 26 and 27 at the InterContinental Hotel Dieu in Lyon, France, companies and strategies that aim for green alternatives in Cement and Construction, from alternative fuels to using alternative raw materials or clinker alternatives, will be giving a new life to old resources. Today’s waste turns into tomorrow’s raw material.

Australia, Hong Kong, India, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Nigeria, Egypt, Greece, Romania, Poland, Austria, The Netherlands, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Ireland, UK, Martinique, Colombia, Brazil and USA are the countries sending C+ executives to this plenary event.

Key points

The two day event will showcase the benefits of using alternative fuels for the cement industry and advocate for implementing a circular and sustainable model by using alternative raw materials (fly ash, pozzolana, GGBS, silica fume, sludge, rice husk, construction recycled material) that can add to or replace clinker in cement production. It will focus on the circular use of resources, demonstrating the best and the most cost effective solutions to help shape the industry for the future.

A new and innovative approach

The primary goal of the CarbonZero Conference and Exhibition is sharing best results among companies, networking and creating new business opportunities. We will have an amazing time with a sperate business lounge and working space, where attendees can have on demand business meetings and one-on-one discussions. We are adding long breaks, social time and dynamic interactions with the industry stakeholders.

In the Research and Development Center, of Cementos Progreso, Guatemala, work has been underway since 2018 on the first cement added with calcined clays from the region, on an industrial scale, comparing its performance with cements added with natural pozzolans and ordinary Portland type (OPC). In 2019, the first industrial clay calcination test was carried out in the old La Pedrera rotary dryer, where about 170 tons of clay were calcined. During the last two years, work has been done to evaluate cement formulations that allow achieving performance comparable to the standar cement formulations, using thermally activated clays, obtaining a recipe that consists of a Clinker factor of 48%, and addition of 30% calcined clay, 17% limestone and gypsum; With this formulation, compressive strenght of 6,500 psi (45 Mpa) were achieved, while with an type 1 cement, 7,000 psi (52 Mpa) was reached with a Clinker factor of 91%. The recipe has been replicated more tan 3 times with equal performance, having already produced more than 500 metric tons of product, with at least 30 % less CO2 emissions compared to OPC.
Decarbonisation is a key challenge for cement industry. To achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, several levers need to be handled along the whole value chain of cement and concrete production. It is widely acknowledged that a significant amount of CO2 emissions has to be reduced by carbon capture and storage/utilisation technologies (CCUS). Their application is connected to high capital but especially operational costs. Preventing the CO2 generation will help to reduce energy consumption, CO2 emittance and additional costs for clinker production. Breakthrough technologies which could lead to a significantly higher thermal efficiency of the clinker burning process are not in sight. However, improvements of equipment and operation at already high technical maturity result in incremental reduction of fossil CO2 generation on lower costs compared to the costs of capture. Increasing the energy efficiency of the clinker burning process is therefore a prerequisite for all ambitious efforts for CO2 reduction.
Andrew Ollier will present on Refractory materials, used in the cement industry to fundamentally protect steel components which are exposed to process-related thermal, mechanical, and chemical attacks, but also influence the wall heat losses and therefore contributes to the overall energy efficiency of the operation. Against this backdrop, Refratechnik Cement GmbH has developed the novel ES (Emission and Energy Saving) refractory lining concept for the whole rotary kiln. As refractory linings in kilns are wear materials and therefore replaced regularly, the ES lining is not linked to significant additional investment costs. Several brick grades are shown to positively influence the energy consumption of the clinker burning process by significantly reducing the heat transfer coefficient. Preventing CO2 generation – by measures such as the refractory ES brick concept – could help to reduce energy consumption, CO2 emissions and additional costs for clinker production all of which helps significantly to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Join us for the dynamic session !
Globally cement industry is responsible for about 8% of planet-warming carbon dioxide emissions — far more than global carbon emissions from aviation.  To achieve deep de-carbonization, we need to rethink how we produce and consume energy and operate a radical switch to renewable and low-carbon energy sources. As Climate Friendly Cement Producer Power Cement is continuously working to overcome global Climate challenges by reducing its GHG emissions through the use of renewable energy sources as well as searching for alternative fuels having low Carbon footprint. During this search power cement team visited many neighboring industry for any chance of using their byproduct/waste product as a valuable fuel. During this journey, Sugar Press Mud was discovered as an alternative fuel. PCL was able to successfully use it as an alternative fuel for the first time in Cement Industry of Pakistan.
