Cemex is supplying high-resistance and Vertua lower-carbon concretes for the construction of Bogota’s First Metro Line, a project that seeks to improve the lives of over a million daily commuters in the largest Colombian city through more efficient and sustainable transportation.
Bogota’s First Metro Line, which will begin commercial operation in March 2028, is expected to have a length of 23.9 kilometers, making it one of the longest metro routes in Latin America.
Cemex will provide 350,000 cubic meters of concrete, out of which 280,000 are special high-strength accelerated concrete to be used for the assembly of piles and beams for the elevated line.
“We are proud to be part of one of the most important infrastructure projects in the region, one that will enhance Bogota’s public transportation system and help build a better and more sustainable future for the capital and its citizens,” said Jesús González, President of Cemex South, Central America, and the Caribbean. “Cemex brings its extensive experience, high-quality products, and reliable service to help make this project a reality.”
For this project, Cemex’s R&D team formulated a specialty concrete mix that achieves, in just eleven hours, double the strength that traditional concrete achieves in one month. Due to the demanding project schedule, the company is also providing three dedicated concrete plants at different work sites on Bogota’s First Metro Line, producing at a rate of 240 cubic meters per hour.
Cemex is also utilizing a state-of-the-art proprietary technology that monitors concrete to measure its strength in real-time during pouring and hardening steps of the construction process. The technology has been named “Spider Tracker” due to its spider-leg-like sensors.
The project is led by Metro Line 1 S.A.S., a partnership between China Harbour Engineering Company Limited and Xi’An Rail Transportation Group Company Limited.
Mass transit systems like metros, subways, and bus rapid transit systems help connect communities and reduce the carbon footprint of urban mobility. Cemex has an extensive portfolio of building solutions that enable more efficient construction of urban infrastructure, and the high quality of its materials can reduce maintenance and repair costs. Through projects like these,
Cemex is building a better, more sustainable future where humanity can thrive.
