On its Project Examples page, CEMBUREAU illustrates how cement is at the heart of Europe’s sustainability transition. Since the launch of the European Green Deal in 2019, the construction sector has been aligning with four key priorities: green cities, energy-efficient and performing buildings, recycling & renovation, and digitalisation. Across Europe, CEMBUREAU member countries are already turning these priorities into concrete results through innovative projects and case studies.
Green cities are emerging with a new vision of value, one that looks beyond immediate costs to consider the whole life cycle of buildings and infrastructure. By applying sustainability rating systems such as BREEAM, LEED, and national certifications, projects are meeting rigorous environmental standards and setting benchmarks for the way future urban spaces are designed and maintained.
Energy-efficient and performing buildings are also taking shape, built on low-energy design principles and low-carbon construction solutions. Thanks to adapted concrete compositions and alternative additions, these projects reduce emissions while delivering resilience and durability. Case studies across Europe highlight how advanced design and material innovation are creating future-proof buildings that meet both climate objectives and user needs.
Recycling and renovation remain central to the sector’s commitment to circularity. From reusing materials directly on-site to reducing virgin raw material demand, construction companies are minimizing waste while preserving resources. Renovation and extension projects—often involving historic buildings—demonstrate how sustainable techniques can preserve cultural heritage while enhancing performance and efficiency.
Digitalisation is adding a new layer of transformation. Tools such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) are streamlining jobsite organisation, cutting costs, and enabling smarter use of resources. At the same time, digital platforms facilitate material inventories for future deconstruction, ensuring that today’s buildings can become tomorrow’s resource banks.
Beyond these Green Deal priorities, other examples showcase how cement and concrete support Europe’s climate ambitions in versatile ways. Renewable energy integration—such as hydro-electric power projects—illustrates the adaptability of these materials to different contexts. From sea walls to flood-resilient housing, cement is proving essential in protecting communities and coastlines against the impacts of a changing climate, combining strength with sustainability to boost resilience.
Together, these projects show that the European Green Deal is not just a policy vision—it is already a reality in progress. Cement and concrete, when used intelligently and sustainably, are vital allies in shaping greener cities, more efficient buildings, smarter renovations, and resilient infrastructure for generations to come.
