  • Carbon Capture Technologies and the Ambition of Net-zero CO2 Emissions by 2050

Chris Davies, Director of CCS Europe joins CarbonZero: Alternative Fuels and Raw Materials for Cement and Construction Global Conference and Exhibition (Bucharest, Romania, October 15-16, 2025).

Extensive deployment of carbon capture technologies is “indispensable”to the achievement of net-zero emissions, claims the European Commission. Climate modelling suggests that 280 million tonnes of CO2 must be captured annually from industrial sources by 2040.

Yet with fewer than one million tonnes being captured at present the difference between the aspiration and the reality is vast.

Carbon capture must be used to reduce emissions from industries that release CO2 in the making of its products, to take CO2 out of the atmosphere by capturing it from biogenic sources, and to use CO2 as a substitute for fossil fuels.

National government support is essential if a business case for CCS investment is to be created. Denmark and the Netherlands are showing the way forward, but most EU governments have yet to put in place the strategies needed.

Industry must raise its voice and persuade policymakers of the need to act.

CCS Europe is a Brussels-based advocacy group that campaigns to convince policymakers of the need for extensive deployment of carbon capture technologies to secure industrial decarbonisation and curb climate change.

A dedicated panel on CCUS is included in the event line-up.
