This presentation explores the historical struggle of women to access higher education, particularly in STEM fields, and their often-overlooked contributions throughout history. It highlights the societal and institutional barriers that prevented women from enrolling in universities and pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. By focusing on key trailblazers such as Hedy Lamarr or Stephanie Kwolek, the talk sheds light on the significant impact women have had on STEM, despite their historical invisibility. The session also addresses the importance of continuing to advocate for gender equality in education and recognizing women’s vital role in shaping modern STEM advancements.
Sustainability is often linked to reducing GHG emissions and achieving a net-zero industry, but it involves a broader approach that integrates both environmental and social dimensions. As sustainability reporting requirements increase, companies must now disclose a wider range of social topics, including women’s inclusion in the workforce. Recognizing that only what gets measured can be improved, these requirements offer an opportunity to enhance key metrics related to women in the industry. Sustainability reporting standards such as GRI, SASB, TCFD, and the new CSRD’s ESRS in the European Union are a crucial tool for advancing gender inclusion. This presentation examines the current metrics of women’s representation in the cement industry and highlights the positive impact of improving gender-related metrics under CSRD’s ESRS, showing how enhancing these metrics helps attract customers and investments through compliance but also strengthens internal operations, promoting a more inclusive and sustainable workforce.
We will explore how women are driving meaningful change and fostering a culture of innovation in traditionally male-dominated fields. This conversation will highlight the successful development of groundbreaking programs that not only create technical and leadership roles for women but also open broader opportunities in key areas such as sustainability. By empowering women to take on leadership in these emerging fields, we are fostering a more inclusive, innovative, and sustainable future.
In this presentation, we will explore how female leadership is shaping the future of ESG, ushering in a new era of empathetic and sustainable business practices. We will analyze how women leaders bring a holistic approach to complex challenges, influencing governance, innovation, and organizational social engagement.  I will demonstrate that companies with gender-diverse leadership succeed tremendously in ESG practices and improved financial outcomes. This talk will include examples of inspiring leaders who challenged the status quo, such as Lisa Jackson and Luiza Trajano, highlighting how they integrated ESG in innovative and impactful ways. This is an opportunity to understand why female leadership is more than a trend: it redefines corporate success and creates a sustainable legacy for future generations.
How the girl of Portuguese emigrants in Switzerland, daughter of a construction worker and a cleaning lady, first in the family to pursue University studies, could become the CEO of the largest cement and construction materials Trading company in the world at 37 years old. What it takes to climb the corporate ladder and what is required to keep at the top. A straightforward view of the beauty and the challenges of top management roles within large corporations, as a woman in a male dominated industry.
Discover how Cementos Argos is fostering a more inclusive workplace by empowering women to reach their full potential. Through various initiatives, we have been creating a more diverse leadership pipeline and promoting gender equality in the Latin American cement sector.
The cement and construction industries have a vital role to play in the economy as they are critical for economic development. On average women make up over 50% of the global population. Unfortunately, their representation in the cement and construction industries remains relatively low, specifically in skilled trades and particularly in emerging markets. Studies have shown that improving diversity can boost economic performance with profits up to 20% higher* in companies where men and women are equally engaged and can improve efficiency and reduce employee turnover. (*Source: Gallup). A gender balanced workplace also brings different perspectives and ways of thinking that can help fuel creativity and drive innovation. Furthermore, with advancements in technology, many roles that were once perceived as requiring physical strength are no longer limited by this factor. As the largest global development finance institution focused on the private sector in emerging markets, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), member of the World Bank Group, targets financing sustainable investments in the cement and construction materials industries. They mobilize private capital to create a world free of poverty on a livable planet. As part of IFC's value add, our Gender Advisory team provides clients with customized tools and resources to strengthen gender inclusion within their operations, resolve labor issues, increase employee engagement, benefit from inclusive sourcing, and enhance business performance and financial returns.
The aim of this presentation is to introduce the potential opportunities that exist for Women, even in the world of cement. By putting on the ‘glasses of recognition’, women can quickly turn adversity into opportunity and become role models for peers in their jobs, achieving results that are recognized by the organization itself. As a real example, I present my professional journey in the CIMPOR Group. In methodological terms, the research is of a basic nature, with an exploratory objective and a qualitative approach, using bibliographical procedures in the form of a systematic literature review, from a narrative perspective.
