CEMEX announced the launch of a new range of additives of natural origin, designed for a lower carbon footprint. These additives use natural, renewable, locally sourced raw materials, and can achieve up to 70% lower carbon footprint than petroleum-based additives.
Admixtures are added to concrete mixes to strengthen attributes such as strength, malleability, and water demand, reducing related carbon emissions, while promoting more sustainable construction practices. Through a unique production process, Admixtures, CEMEX’s admixtures, are the first in the building materials industry to offer these attributes using biobased raw materials. The new range of admixtures is part of CEMEX’s Vertua portfolio of construction solutions that have enhanced sustainability attributes. The products are anticipated to be launched in CEMEX’s markets in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, with the launch expanding to other markets in the coming months.
“Innovation is a fundamental part of our efforts to become a net zero emissions company and to foster a more circular building materials industry. Our new line of naturally-derived additives plays an important role in this transition,” said Fernando González Olivieri, CEMEX CEO. “By nature, concrete is a highly sustainable and recyclable building material due to its strength and durability. Innovative additives seek to strengthen those sustainable attributes for our customers.”
CEMEX naturally-derived additives seek to improve the sustainable performance of various CEMEX products:
- ISOPLAST BIO: concrete plasticizer that can achieve higher levels of malleability with the same water content, which would allow a carbon reduction of up to 10%.
- ISOFLEX BIO: concrete plasticizers and superplasticizers that can reduce carbon and water use by up to 20 to 30%.
- ISOFLOW BIO: high-performance superplasticizer technology for ready-mix concrete producers that would allow up to 50% water and carbon reduction in concrete mix designs.
- ISOMILL BIO: Grinding aids and cement builders that can provide up to 10% carbon reduction, increased process efficiency and increased strength.
The additives are part of CEMEX’s Urban Solutions commercial offer that enables the construction of sustainable, resilient and circular cities. This new range of products is aligned with CEMEX’s Futuro en Acción program to build a more sustainable and circular future with the main objective of becoming a company with net zero CO 2 emissions by 2050. Since the launch of Futuro en Acción, the company has achieved record carbon reductions.
